He made history when he was appointed as the first person of Chinese origin from China to become both clinical and academic Professor in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery in the UK and Europe at Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College, Hammersmith Hospital formally known as the Royal Postgraduate Medical School led by Professor Leslie Blumgart, a nationally and internationally renowned institute for HPB surgery, and when recognised this year at the House of Commons in the UK of the Peoples’ Awards receiving the award for Medical Consultant of the Year in 2026.
Studied at the Royal London Medical College, University of London and went on to qualify as a doctor in 1994. After completing 2-year full-time research at the Imperial College to be awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine and completing 6 years training in Surgery in London, he was appointed as consultant surgeon and Assistant Professor in 2002 then through promotion to become Associate Professor in 2005 and Professor of Surgery in 2007 at Imperial College. He moved from Hammersmith Hospital to the Royal Marsden Hospital in 2017 to set up the 1st comprehensive robotic HPB surgical unit in the UK.
Leading the field of minimally invasive and Robotic HPB surgery nationally and internationally and lately introduced robotic Da Vinci SP surgery in the UK and Europe in HPB Surgery. His research focused on microRNAs for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, circulating tumour cells (CTCs), and liver regeneration. He presented the first clinical paper on radiofrequency ablation in liver cancer at IHPBA meeting in Madrid in 1998 and published it in Am J Surg 1999.
He established the first Robotic HPB fellowship programme with the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSE) and performed over 1200 robotic pancreatic and liver operations including the 1st laparoscopic (2010) and Robotic Whipple’s (2017) operation and major liver resection (2017) in the UK, the largest number of robotic cases in the UK and a few in the West. In liver surgery, he introduced RALPPS to increase the number of patients for liver surgery by inducing liver hypertrophy prior to liver resection. In pancreatic surgery, he described LVPJ and LPG for central pancreatectomy to preserve pancreas and spleen, and most recently robotic SCARPS for locally advanced pancreatic cancer encasing coeliac axis trunk.
He has over 300 publications including Nature, Nature Com, The Lancet Oncology, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, ACF Nano, Gastroenterology, JAMA surgery, Ann Surg. He is the training programme director for Northwest Thames of London. Nationally, I am a member of consultant appointment committee for RCSE. The programme director for the robotic HPB fellowship of the RCSE. He is the court of examiners of the RCS for MRCS and intercollegiate FRC S Examinations.
Internationally, he organized the first robotic HPB user group meeting in Switzerland at IHPBA and is a member of many international HPB societies
