Professor Long R Jiao MD FRCS

Professor of Surgery, Chair of Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) Surgery, The Royal Marsden Hospital, Imperial College, London, UK

He made history when he was appointed as the first person of Chinese origin from China to become both clinical and academic Professor in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery in the UK and Europe at Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College, Hammersmith Hospital formally known as the Royal Postgraduate Medical School led by Professor Leslie Blumgart, a nationally and internationally renowned institute for HPB surgery, and when  recognised this year at the House of Commons in the UK of the Peoples’ Awards receiving the award for Medical Consultant of the Year in 2026.

Studied at the Royal London Medical College, University of London and went on to qualify as a doctor in 1994.  After completing 2-year full-time research at the Imperial College to be awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine and completing 6 years training in Surgery in London, he was appointed as consultant surgeon and Assistant Professor in 2002 then through promotion to become Associate Professor in 2005 and Professor of Surgery in 2007 at Imperial College. He moved from Hammersmith Hospital to the Royal Marsden Hospital in 2017 to set up the 1st comprehensive robotic HPB surgical unit in the UK.
